Scope of the workshop
Recently, discrete breathers became a focus of research in the field
of dynamical localization in nonlinear lattices. Significant progress has
been achieved in the understanding of their existence and properties. The
aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers who are actively working
in this field, to give an opportunity to present recent results, exchange
ideas and methods, and to stimulate further activities in this field. A
special aim is to look for experimental relevance of the workshop's subject
as well as for possible connections to other topics in physics.
The following topics will be addressed, among others:
Discrete breathers: | existence, bifurcations, stability, movability, finite
temperatures, interactions with plane waves and inhomogeneities |
Quantum breathers: | characterization, existence, tunneling,
correspondence with classical phase space properties |
Related fields: | polaron theory, interacting fermions |
Applications: | vibrations and magnetic excitations in anharmonic
molecules and crystals, arrays of coupled Josephson junctions, photonic band gap materials, granular and porous materials |
Organizational Details
The meeting will consist of seminars, discussions (to be scheduled during the workshop) and spare time for additional talks, free discussions and work. Workstations will be available.
Participation is mainly by invitations, however, some additional applications will be considered. The total number of participants is limited to 30. We are over the limits!
There will be a special issue in Physica D in 1998 containing the proceedings of this workshop. Details will be announced in the next weeks. Check regularly here! In the meanwhile see the complete booklet below which contains some information on that.
The workshop is organized by the Max-Planck-Institute for Physics of Complex Systems in Dresden. It will be held in the institute's building. Acommodation will be arranged in a nearby hotel. The participants are expected to arrive on Sunday, April 6th in the afternoon. Departure is planned for Saturday, April 12th.
For further information please contact Ingo Allekotte (Head of MPIPKS Visitors Program), Sergej Flach, Robert MacKay or email to the workshop account.
Some final informations can be found here.
