Analyzing the electron-phonon interaction in metals in the framework of the Migdal-Eliashberg approach we found that the dimensionless electron-phonon coupling λ cannot exceed a certain critical value (approximately 3.7). Increasing λ beyond this value leads to an instability which is likely to be accompanied by a metal-insulator transition. This also implies an upper bound on the superconducting Tc. I will compare the bounds on λ and Tc with existing experimental data.

  1. how strong can the electron-phonon interaction in metals be?
